A glass-plate copy of a print on fused quartz, one of the "Timely Topics" pictures that the Detroit News put out in the 1910s and 1920s to explain new technology to readers. Fused quartz, made by melting purified silica, was a relatively new material then, prized for its clarity and its ability to withstand extreme heat and pass ultraviolet light, which made it useful in laboratory apparatus and early lighting. The Keystone View Company printed the original picture, and the Detroit Publishing Company distributed it, so it reflects how a modern industrial material was presented to a general audience of the period.
