The title pairs the aerostatic vessel, the gas balloon itself, with the aeronaut who flew it, so the print looks at both machine and pilot. Balloon flight was still a novelty in 1827, some forty-odd years after the first crewed ascents in France in 1783, and it drew crowds to public launches. Etchings like this one carried news of the sport to readers who could not attend, mixing scientific interest with spectacle. It survives as an illustration in a broadside collection, a sign of how such images circulated as cheap printed material.
