Few airships of the period were as closely tied to a single event as the California Arrow, which Roy Knabenshue flew at the St. Louis World's Fair, the Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1904. Designed by Thomas S. Baldwin, the craft carried its pilot in a small suspended car beneath the envelope, and this stereo card shows the aeronaut aboard. The library dates the card to about 1905, although the flights themselves took place in 1904, when the fair drew huge crowds eager for new spectacles. Stereo views like this one, copyrighted by C.L. Wasson, were made to be seen through a stereoscope at home.
