Printed around 1870 as a tobacco package label, this lithograph takes its title, *Up in a Balloon*, from the sky-high subject that gives it a playful, eye-catching quality. Labels like this were pasted onto boxes and pouches so that buyers would notice one brand among many on a crowded shop counter, and tobacco makers often chose lighthearted pictures to stand out. Balloon ascents were a popular spectacle in the 1860s and 1870s, drawing crowds to fairgrounds and town squares, so the scene would have been familiar to viewers. The copyright notice on the print names A. Seemuller as the party claiming the design.
