Balloon ascents drew large crowds in American cities in the 1870s, and Currier & Ives, the New York firm that sold inexpensive lithographs to a broad public, turned that fascination into a popular subject. "Up in a Balloon," published by the firm around 1876, belongs to its run of lithographs from that decade, when the company's output mixed sporting scenes, humor, and novelties. The record does not name the figures or the setting, so the print is best understood as an example of how the firm captured the excitement of aerial travel for ordinary buyers. It is catalogued as number 6804 in Gale Research's raisonné of the firm's work.
