Railway Street, which runs through the trading grounds known as The Fair at Nizhny Novgorod, frames this stereograph of a newly built church. The Nizhny Novgorod fair was one of the largest commercial gatherings in the Russian Empire, drawing merchants from across the country and beyond to the confluence of the Volga and Oka rivers each summer. The H.C. White Company issued this view as a numbered stereo card, meant for viewing through a stereoscope, a popular way for American households around 1900 to see distant places. The caption card's tracings mention churches, bells, and markets, though the record notes that these details are unverified.
