The German proverb "Hunger ist der beste Koch," meaning "hunger is the best cook," gives this 1898 carbon print its title and its good-humored tone. Myra Albert-Wiggins made the picture, and the record names Mildred Wiggins as its subject. Carbon printing, a pigment process prized for its soft tones, let photographers present such genre scenes as fine art, and this one won prizes in London and Buffalo after appearing at a 1899 Philadelphia salon.
