Thomas Moran's view of the Great Salt Lake shows the inland sea in Utah's high desert, a body of water with no outlet whose brine is several times saltier than the ocean. The print is a chromolithograph, a method that built up a color image from many separate stone impressions, and it was issued by Louis Prang & Co. of Boston as part of its American Chromo series. Prang's firm did much to bring color reproductions of American scenery into middle-class homes in the 1870s. Moran, who was known for his western landscapes, made the image at a time when many Easterners knew the West mainly through pictures like this one.
