Devils Slide is a pair of nearly vertical limestone walls in northern Utah, with a narrow groove between them that looks like a giant stone chute. Timothy O'Sullivan made this albumen print in 1869 as part of Clarence King's Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel, a survey that paired geological mapping with photography to document the West's terrain. The photographs were meant to record rock structure as much as scenery, so the sharp, tilted strata here are as much a scientific record as a view. The print is plate 32 from the survey's published series.
