Few pictures of the war at sea show a voyage quite like this one. The *Deutschland* was a cargo submarine, built to carry trade rather than torpedoes, and its captain, Paul König, was a merchant mariner who had commanded ships for the North German Lloyd line. In 1916 the boat made two Atlantic crossings to Baltimore, which German newspapers celebrated as proof that the British blockade could be evaded. Dating from 1917, the picture reflects the propaganda value those voyages held at home, when Germany's navy was struggling against British sea power. Images like this turned a commercial venture into a symbol of national resilience.
