Few recruiting appeals from the first months of the war name a single Montreal regiment as directly as this one, which calls a young man to join the 73rd Royal Highlanders of Canada. The 73rd was a militia unit with Scottish roots, and after Canada entered the war in August 1914, local regiments like it became key sources of volunteers for the Canadian Expeditionary Force. The record also credits a United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation sponsor, an odd pairing for a 1914 Canadian appeal, since that agency was not created until 1917.
