Under the banner line "Mothers, wives and sweethearts expect you to protect them," this 1914 lithograph recruits for the 73rd Royal Highlanders of Canada, a Highland battalion that drew on Scottish communities in Canada. After Britain declared war in August 1914, Canada raised the Canadian Expeditionary Force through local units like this one, and posters such as this one appealed to family loyalty and a sense of duty. The record also lists a United States Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation sponsor, a reminder that the print's later reproduction and distribution followed a different path from its original wartime purpose.
