A stag stands alone on a rocky outcrop with a few sparse trees around it, rendered in loose, impressionistic strokes of pastel. The drawing is a storyboard study for Walt Disney's feature film *Bambi*, released in 1942 and adapted from Felix Salten's 1923 novel about a young deer growing up in the forest. Storyboard artists used quick color sketches like this one to plan camera angles, staging, and mood before animation began. The catalog's subject headings, which include "mental states," suggest the image was meant to convey a sense of solitude and watchfulness rather than action.
