The title names Evelyn Thaw, the married name of Evelyn Nesbit, the artists' model and stage performer who wed the wealthy Pittsburgh heir Harry K. Thaw in 1905. Their marriage became the center of a sensational scandal after Harry Thaw shot the architect Stanford White in 1906, and his trial in New York in 1907 drew heavy national newspaper coverage. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that distributed news photographs to newspapers, handled many portraits of people in the news at the time. The identification rests on unverified caption data, so it should be treated as provisional.
