This view shows a New York playground, one of the outdoor play spaces that spread through American cities in the early 1900s as reformers pushed to give children in crowded tenement neighborhoods somewhere safer than the street to play. The Bain News Service, the New York photo agency run by George Grantham Bain, sent its photographers out to record city life, and its glass negatives capture the everyday scenes it considered newsworthy. The record gives no date or exact location, so the picture is best read as a glimpse of the period's urban playground movement rather than a documented event. Its small glass negative format is typical of the agency's work.
