The name on this glass negative, E.E. McCall, is the only identifying detail in the record, and the Library of Congress notes that it comes from unverified caption data, so the subject's identity should be treated as provisional. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that sold news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Its glass plates, usually 5 by 7 inches or smaller, were a common format before flexible film took over, and they give a sharp, detailed record of the period. Without a date or a verified caption, the portrait is best read as a document of its time and of how press photographs were produced and stored.
