Yosemite Fall, the tallest waterfall in the Yosemite Valley, drops in three main tiers, with the upper cascade alone falling roughly 1,430 feet from the rim above. Its name has long been linked to the Ahwahneechee people, whose ancestral home was the valley, and the fall became one of the first natural wonders Americans sought out after Yosemite was set aside by Congress in 1864 as a protected grant. Painters and photographers working in the valley in the following decades helped turn its cliffs and seasonal flow into an emblem of the American West. Worth noticing is how the fall changes through the year, running strongest in spring snowmelt and often thinning to a trickle by late summer.
