This view shows the Stockdale ranch in Kern County, California, where workers are stacking cut alfalfa, a crop that was spreading through the irrigated valleys of the state in the late 1800s. Stacking loose hay into tall, shaped piles was the usual way to store feed before mechanical balers, so the picture records a routine, labor-heavy stage of ranch work. The photographer is given as Watkins, and the print is catalogued among the period's California views. Its date of 1888 places it in a decade when Kern County's agriculture was expanding quickly.
