Produce from Kern County, in California's southern San Joaquin Valley, fills this agricultural exhibit in San Francisco, where counties competed to show what their land could grow. Carleton Watkins, one of the best-known photographers of the American West, made the image in 1887 and catalogued it as number 287. Exhibits like this one helped growing regions advertise their harvests to buyers and prospective settlers. Railroads had reached Bakersfield, the county seat, in the 1870s, which tied the region's crops more closely to the rest of the state.
