Theodore Roosevelt appears here at a podium, shown from the waist up as he addresses an audience, a pose that captures the forceful, direct public speaking for which he became known. The record dates the picture to about 1902 and to June 4, a period when Roosevelt was in the early part of his presidency, which he had assumed after William McKinley's assassination in September 1901. Portraits of presidents in action like this one were valuable to newspapers and the public of the era, since they showed a leader engaging directly with the crowd rather than posing stiffly in a studio.
