Central News Photo Service, a commercial agency that supplied pictures to newspapers, issued this 1917 print as number 4292, and its title promises Marines at work on horseback rather than in parade formation. Horses and mules still hauled guns, supplies and messages for armies on both sides of the First World War, even as motor trucks were beginning to take over much of that work. The Marine Corps was then expanding quickly for the war, and a picture like this shows how the service mixed older field methods with the newer demands of modern combat.
