Few early Washington buildings have survived in a form that architects still study, and this courthouse, finished in 1820 to a design by George Hadfield, is one of them. Hadfield was an Irish-born architect who had worked in the capital, and his courthouse reflects the restrained Georgian and Federal style of the period. Harry Francis Cunningham made this scaled engraving for his 1914 book *Measured Drawings of Georgian Architecture*, which recorded such buildings in precise detail at a time when many were being altered or lost. The sheet shows the building's proportions and ornament as an architect would need them, not as a picturesque view.
