Here a sitter in a bonnet is shown seated, her face and posture recorded with the sharp, mirror-like detail that daguerreotypes were known for. The image dates to 1851, only about a decade after Louis Daguerre publicly unveiled his process in 1839, when the technique was still new and costly enough that most portraits were made in studios by professional operators. Because each daguerreotype was a single unique plate rather than a negative that could be reprinted, every surviving example is an original object. Its silvery surface also shifts with the viewing angle, so the image can look positive in one light and nearly disappear in another.
