A steam fire engine in Cincinnati, torn apart by an explosion, is the subject of this wood engraving, one of the more dramatic fire-service scenes of its era. Steam pumpers had only recently begun replacing hand-operated engines, and their high-pressure boilers made them dangerous to crews and bystanders alike. The scene appeared in *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* on December 22, 1855, a weekly that relied on engravings like this to bring distant events to its readers. The artist is recorded only tentatively as Bobbett-Hooper, so that attribution should be treated with caution.
