Dated December 26, 1916, this view of a naval parade comes from a caption whose title and date have not been independently verified. It belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection of news photographs from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied pictures to newspapers and magazines. The Naval Act of August 1916 had just authorized a large fleet expansion, so public interest in the navy and its sailors ran high, and parades like this one drew crowds eager to see the ships' crews.
