Few details survive beyond the title, which the Bain News Service wrote on the negative or its caption card and which has not been independently verified, so the exact route and occasion remain uncertain. The picture is dated December 27, 1916, a few months before the United States entered the First World War in April 1917, when naval preparedness was a frequent theme of public ceremonies and newspaper coverage. George Grantham Bain's agency supplied news pictures to newspapers across the country, and its glass negatives capture the ceremonial side of military life during those tense years.
