Johnstown, Pennsylvania, in the late nineteenth century was a mill town built along the Conemaugh River, where the Cambria Iron Company and its successor steelworks employed much of the population. Iron and steel production drew immigrant workers from Central and Eastern Europe, and the town's neighborhoods, churches, and rail connections grew up around the furnaces and rolling mills. A bird's-eye view like this one was often drawn to attract investors, merchants, and new residents, so it emphasizes the streets, factories, and rail lines that signaled prosperity. Johnstown is remembered most for the flood of May 31, 1889, when the failure of the South Fork Dam sent water through the valley and killed more than 2,000 people. Many people who lived there before that disaster would have known the town as a busy industrial center on the rivers.
