A Loving Thought is a Valentine postcard built around a woman posed inside a large heart, a format that was everywhere in the early twentieth century, when printed cards were the usual way to send a sentimental greeting. Cards like this were typically mass-produced in color lithography, with decorative borders, gilt accents and short verses, and they were sold in bulk to stationers and drugstores each winter. Because they were inexpensive and easy to mail, many survive today in scrapbooks and family collections, offering a glimpse of how courtship and affection were expressed in print.
