A girl framed inside a large red heart sits at the center of this Valentine greeting postcard, a motif that was extremely popular in the early twentieth century. Valentine cards of this era were often mass-produced by American and European printers, and they gave children and young women a sentimental image to send to friends and family in the weeks before February 14. The heart frame and soft, rounded portrait style reflect the decorative taste of the period, when illustrated postcards became a widespread way to exchange greetings. Notice how the card combined printed imagery with the simple act of mailing a message, which made it both a keepsake and a small piece of everyday social life.
