Cupid is shown here hauling an oversized heart, a playful exaggeration that sets this card apart from the more modest sweethearts and flowers that fill most Valentine designs of its era. Postcards like this one were a major part of the Valentine trade in the late 1800s and early 1900s, when cheap color printing and the postal system made it easy to send a greeting for a penny or two. Cards of this type often mixed sentiment with humor, and the winged Cupid, borrowed from classical mythology, was a familiar figure for romantic messages. Look closely at the lettering and border, which can help date the card and show how printers marketed affection to ordinary buyers.
