Cupid hovers over a woman enclosed in a heart, a pairing that gives this card its particular charm among Valentine's Day designs of its era. Penny postcards like this one, with a printed verse beneath the illustration, were popular in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when sending a card was an inexpensive way to express affection or humor. Such cards often used stock imagery of cherubs, hearts, and floral borders, which were reproduced in large runs and sold through stationers and shops. Look closely at the verse, since its wording and typeface often reveal a great deal about the card's intended audience and when it was printed.
