A cherub leans in toward a young woman at a window shaped like a heart, the kind of sentimental image that filled Valentine's Day cards and parlor keepsakes in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The heart-shaped frame does much of the storytelling, turning a simple domestic scene into a love token. Mass-printed valentines of this era were often sent anonymously or with a handwritten verse, so the inscription "To my Valentine" would have been meant to speak directly to its recipient. Look closely at the cherub's pose and the girl's expression to see how illustrators of the period used gesture to suggest courtship.
