A winged cherub clutching a key and a red heart sets this card apart from the usual roses and doves that fill Valentine's Day designs. The key, a familiar emblem of secrets and of unlocking a loved one's heart, pairs with the heart to make the sentiment plain. Printed Valentines of this kind grew popular in the nineteenth century, when mass-produced lithographed cards let people send affection by post, often with verses in an ornate hand. Cherubs were a favorite motif, borrowed from Renaissance art and Victorian sentimental taste, so this card shows how a classical figure was adapted for a personal message.
