Cupid carries a basket of red hearts on this card, a sentimental motif that shows up again and again in Valentine's Day imagery. The phrase "With my Love" is printed as the message, the kind of short, affectionate line that let senders express feelings they might have found hard to say aloud. Mass-produced valentines of this sort became popular in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when printers turned out cheap lithographed cards for sweethearts, friends, and schoolchildren. Cupid, the Roman god of desire, had been the standard emblem of romantic love for centuries by then, and the heart-shaped basket ties the card to that long tradition.
