A cherub carrying a heart-shaped basket gives this Valentine card its central image, and the words "With my Love" printed beneath it make the sentiment plain. Cards of this type were widely sold in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when mass-produced greetings with lace-like borders, embossed details and sentimental figures became a popular way to send affection by post. Cupid-style cherubs were a familiar shorthand for romantic love, borrowed from classical imagery and adapted for ordinary people exchanging tokens on February 14. The card's ornamental style reflects that era's taste for decorative sentiment.
