Die-cut hearts with children on them were a staple of early twentieth-century Valentine's Day cards, when mass-produced greetings became popular in the United States and Britain. This example, titled "Hello! Be My Valentine!", uses a heart-shaped cutout so the card's outline does much of the design work before any color is added. Cards like this were often sent between schoolchildren, who exchanged them in class, and the sentimental, cheerful style reflects how the holiday was marketed to young people. Look closely at the printing and the cutout edges, which show how such cards were made by hand-fed presses and finishing work.
