Children riding a tricycle carry the joke on this card, with the bold caption "my speed, BIG BOY" pushing the humor toward a teasing message about who is keeping up with whom. Comic Valentines like this were a large commercial trade from the late 1800s into the mid-20th century, when printers produced humorous and sentimental cards by the thousands for schoolchildren to exchange and for adults to send to friends. Cartoon figures and slangy captions were common in these designs, and the childlike setting kept the teasing gentle. The lettering does much of the work here, so it is worth reading the card's text closely.
