A sentimental Valentine card from the early twentieth century, its bright printed scene shows a girl with a puppy and the line "Say, won't you please hang up a minute," a sly joke about a telephone call that a sweetheart is supposed to end. The phrasing points to the period when the telephone was becoming a household fixture, and many greeting cards of that era poked gentle fun at new habits and manners. The card's mix of a rhymed verse and a cheerful animal makes it typical of the mass-printed valentines that circulated widely in those decades.
