A die-cut Valentine from the early twentieth century, its shaped edges following the outline of a boy and his dog gliding across the ice. Greeting cards like this were mass-produced by printers in the United States and Europe, and die-cutting, which used steel blades to stamp out irregular shapes, made them stand out from flat rectangular cards in the mailbox. Valentine's Day exchanges were especially popular with children, who often sent cards to classmates, so scenes of play like this one, with its cheerful winter setting, were a common choice. The card's paper and printed color show the wear of handling, which is part of what makes it worth a close look.
