Princeton's varsity crew, pictured here on May 18, 1922, represents one of the university's most established athletic programs. Rowing was a major spring sport for American colleges in the 1920s, and crews from schools such as Princeton, Yale, Harvard, and Cornell competed in regattas that drew large crowds and considerable newspaper coverage. Photographs like this one recorded the rowers, their eight-oared shells, and the coaches and teams that made intercollegiate racing a popular spectacle of the period.
