The title on this glass negative names the Catalan cellist Pablo Casals, though the record marks that identification as unverified and gives no date. The negative comes from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, so it was probably made for a press story rather than as a studio portrait. Casals was then one of the best-known cellists in the world, and his concert appearances drew wide press attention. Glass plates of this size were the standard working medium of the period, which makes the negative a useful record of how news photographs were made.
