The only identifying detail on this glass negative is the name Emily Grigsby, though the Library of Congress notes that the title comes from unverified data on the negative or its caption card, so the sitter and occasion remain uncertain. It belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Its small plate format reflects the dry glass negatives photographers used from the 1880s into the 1920s, and the clothing, pose and setting still tell viewers a good deal about the period.
