The name Nanni Safe is the only identifying detail this glass negative offers, and the record notes that it comes from caption cards and labels written at the time rather than from a verified source. George Grantham Bain founded his New York news photo agency around 1899, and it supplied pictures of people, events and places to newspapers and magazines. Its tens of thousands of negatives document much of American life in the early twentieth century. With no date recorded, this picture is best read as part of that larger body of work, where captions were often brief and sometimes unreliable.
