Titled *Harness Handicap*, this 1918 glass negative captures a race in which trotters or pacers pulled light two-wheeled carts called sulkies. Handicapping adjusted each horse's starting position or distance to even out the contest, so a slower animal could still hope to finish near the front. The negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency whose early twentieth-century news photographs cover sports, politics and everyday life. The title is noted as unverified, so the track and the specific race remain uncertain, but the image still shows a sport that drew large crowds in that period.
