The title, "Milton & De Palma," names two people or a pairing, perhaps performers, but the record does not say who they were or when the picture was made. The name comes from caption cards and negative notes that the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, used in the early twentieth century, and the library has not verified it. The Bain Collection holds tens of thousands of glass negatives from the agency's work, which covered theater, sports, politics, and daily news for newspaper clients. Because the agency often recorded sitters and events quickly and with brief notes, these early titles are useful leads but should be checked against other sources before they are treated as settled facts.
