The town of Péronne, on the Somme River in northern France, is the subject of this 1918 glass negative, which the Bain News Service titled "Pieronne Retaken." The caption is recorded as unverified, so the exact scene is uncertain, but the title points to the period when Allied forces pushed the Germans out of the town in the late summer of 1918. Péronne had changed hands during the fighting of 1916 and the German spring offensive, and it was left heavily damaged. The Bain collection, built from a New York news photo service, preserves many images like this one, which record wartime news for newspapers and magazines.
