Few veterans' organizations were as visible in 1925 as the Grand Army of the Republic, the fraternal body of Union Civil War veterans, and this glass negative records one of its parades that year. By the mid-1920s the surviving members were elderly men, and their marches, often held around Memorial Day, drew crowds turning out to honor a generation that was rapidly passing. The negative comes from the Bain News Service, a New York wire photo agency whose photographers documented news events across the country in the early twentieth century. The title comes from caption information associated with the original negatives, so the exact route and occasion are not recorded.
