The Grand Army of the Republic, the fraternal organization of Union Civil War veterans, held parades in American towns for decades after the war, and this glass negative from the Bain News Service files appears to show one of them. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified notes on the original negative or caption card. Bain's photographers worked in the early twentieth century, when surviving veterans were growing old and their processions drew large crowds, especially on Memorial Day and at encampments. The ranks and spectators are worth a close look for clues about how these public commemorations were staged.
