Set on Central Park West at 72nd Street, the Dakota stood at the edge of a neighborhood that was still largely undeveloped when it rose, and its name is traditionally said to be a joke about how remote the site felt. This 1885 print reproduces a drawing of the exterior as it ran in *The Sanitary Engineer*, a trade journal devoted to plumbing, ventilation and building hygiene, which suggests the building drew attention for its modern domestic systems as well as its looks. Designed by Henry J. Hardenbergh and completed around 1884, the Dakota was among the earliest large apartment houses built for wealthy New York families, and it set a model for the luxury buildings that followed.
