Two members of the "New York Female Giants" appear here: Miss McCullum crouched behind the plate as catcher, and Miss Ryan waits at bat. The team's name borrowed the fame of the New York Giants, the city's major league club of the day. Exhibition teams of women players toured in the 1910s, drawing crowds who came as much to see the novelty as the game. Underwood & Underwood, a large commercial photography firm, registered the picture for copyright in July 1913, so it was made to be published and sold to newspapers and the public.
